Badwater Prediction:

Between 40 and 50 hours. I was 16 minutes behind Anne Langstaff at Baldy Peaks, I beat her at Leona Divide (2000), She beat me late in the race at San Juan Trail in 2001. So I think I shouldn't be too far off her 40 hour pace. Maybe 42 or 43. Also, I've done well at track ultras which are more like a road race than a trail run (surface, availability of aid).

Weird Experience:

I was an official at 2001 Badwater. After the leaders of my group had finished (of course, I hadn't slept since the start), I dropped off my pictures for the website and started checking on the welfare of the various folks still on the course. At 10 pm, I was out around Keeler and it occurred to me that I was very sleepy. When I got back to town, it looked like a billboard was mounted on two stone pillars in the middle of 395. I was thinking "How did that get there?"

Challenge:

2000 Angeles Crest. I stiffened up from my waist down at about 37 miles and got a groin strain at 52 miles. Denise Jones and my wife rubbed some magic stuff on my legs and sent me on my way. At about 80 miles during a difficult climb, I couldn't bend one knee because of the pain. Luckily Matt Palocsay and his pacer Mona Landfield caught me and gave me some Advil. I bonked really badly after that and almost quit at the next aid station (Kathy Brown made me lie down instead). When I got up, I felt much better and jogged in the last 17 miles.

Why:

The challenge of competing with yourself, the friendship with the other folks. There is an undeniable attraction to doing things most people would consider impossible.

Why badwater:

Because my wife will let me. Also, Badwater seems to me to be the epitome of what a road race should be, crossing vast distances and mountain ranges out in the desert. Plus, there is such a family atmosphere at Badwater.
