Badwater Prediction:

Under 40 hours. Based on most recent personal finishing times of 100 mile events (Rio Del Lago & Western States) and Badwater finishing times of comparable runners.

Weird Experience:

Good Thunder Snowshoe 50 Km Stage Race, Duluth, MN. February 1996. Superior hiking trail was covered with 6 feet of snow and unmarked except for permanent trail markings every 1/2 mile. Runners were required to use a map and compass to try to stay on course. I got lost many times and was exhausted from falling through the snow up to my waist. I finally ended up on the highway, which I gladly took to the end of the first stage. I was disqualified for missing an aid station.

Challenge:

My most challenging ultramarathon was a solo, 100-mile run on Mt. Diablo, CA, October 27-28, 2001. The course went to the summit seven times and had more elevation gain/loss (31,000’) than any prior 100 mile run. I had bad experiences the month before with DNFs at both Rio Del Lago and Angeles Crest. The purpose of this solo run was to regain my confidence.

Why:

The reasons I enjoy doing ultras include:
· Maintaining health and fitness.
· Enjoying the serenity of nature.
· My wife, Sarah, is also an ultrarunner. It is a great family hobby.
· Applying my knowledge of human physiology to my performance under extreme and adverse conditions.
· The sense of accomplishment in completing extremely difficult tasks.
