Badwater Prediction:
Between 50 and 60 hours: Based on the finishing time of the desert-cup 2001, 168 km through sand and (sometimes heat) i am sure to be able to finish in time. Compared to the much slower average speed of the desert cup in 2000 and the Mds 1999 i have to admit that in these two events i have been injured (1999) and sick a few days before start (2000). So if i can keep up my trainig and will be healthy i am sure to keep an average speed of 5 km/hour and so there will be some time left to sleep.

Weird Experience:
Marathon des Sables: 6-days stage ultramarathon 225 km through the marokkan sahara: I had no experience neither in ultra-races nor in desert-races. Because of several reasons i had tremendous blisters already on the second day. it was very hard because of the pain but no problem because of exhaustion.

Challenge:
desert-cup 2000: 165 km through the jordanian desert from wadi rum to petra: A few days before the start i had been sick and have been treated with antibiotics. Although this was no problem at the beginning i had to realize that my physical condition was worse than i have thought. After about 18 hours i was absoluteley exhausted and was very near to quit (but i did not). i was able to stay in the race and it was the first time i have been exhaustet to that degree. It was the hardest run i have ever done. btw. in the following year i had no problems in finishing the desert-cup - even 14 hours faster.

Why:
I love the nature (all ultras i ran were in the desert); it is challenging to see what someones body and mind can do; and last but not least i am interested in this field scientifically

Why badwater:
it is hot
it is absolutely challeging
it is (in my personal point of view) the logical next step after marathon des sables and desert cup
Additionally I know some people who have finished some of the races i did and who have finished badwater - and they were faszinated
Besides the personal experience it is interesting to 1) see these kind of people and 2) to incorporate this personal experience in my scientific knowledge
