River Run Parker, Arizona July 1998, 1999, 2000:

These were club races and everyone kept their own times. These were summer desert conditions. I was 14:10 in 2000. The River Run was a club race that traditionally has been done in July or August in the Parker-Lake Havasu area of Western Arizona. It was open to anyone and ran a route from Marina Village up toward Cattail Cove, back to Parker Dam and then around the River. It was a word of mouth event that started with Team Malibu back in the 80’s, (and actually included a bike leg for those who wanted the brick effect), faded out and was resurrected 4 years ago. Because of the nature of the event, you had to have your own support.

I have a home in Parker, Arizona. This is probably why these runs were set up as part of Team Malibu. I was also a fireman there and have trained extensively in this area and have logged thousands of miles in this part of the desert. A great deal of this mileage was of the ultra & long variety, as this is what I prefer. Much of it has been in the summer months. This is where I plan to do the majority of my training and will be spending at least a month there prior to the race.

Challenge:

Long, long, long training runs through the Santa Monica Mountains. Lots of elevation gain. Also all day desert runs in the summer. I really wouldn't call these weird though. I would call them fun.(maybe that's weird)

Why:

I enjoy running distance. There is always some challenge that tests you. The adventure, the story, all those things.

Why badwater:

For the challenge and the ultimate accomplishment. I've visualized crossing that finish line for a long time. I've visualized the course through the Valley, turning right on to Hwy 395, running through Lone pine and knowing I'm almost there. The training, the race....it's all an adventure. I'm really looking forward to it.

Resume: My crew will include Jeff Bell and George Toberman. They are both veterans of Furnace Creek 508, Race Across America, and many other major endurance events. Also, Jeff was an official at the last two Badwater races, so that experience will be an asset to me. I am also planning on attending the clinic(s) in May and July.
