Crewed/paced - Badwater '01 - Paced 35 miles

Previous Badwater Racing: None
Previous Badwater Crewing: 2001 Badwater - Crew/pacer for Greg Minter who buckled and finished in 46:13:32. I paced him for 35 miles. I learned that it takes more than determination and athleticism to complete Badwater. I learned a lot about some critical things that will help meu get to the finish line: the supplies that are needed and the logistics involved in moving them along the course; the importance of a knowledgeable and experienced crew and pacers; and how to train for and pace myself in the intense heat of Death Valley.
Previous Badwater Clinic 2001 Badwater - Crew/pacer for Greg Minter at Memorial Day Weekend Clinic . Paced for 23 miles.

Badwater Prediction:

Between 50 and 60 hours. My goal is to go all the way to the top!!!

Weird Experience:

My weirdest experience was probably at Badwater last year. I had trained with Greg Minter for many years before crewing and pacing for him during the 2001 race. We both got pretty emotional in the last stretches of the race, though neither of us are likely to be described as the emotional type!

The original plan was for Greg to cross the finish line by himself. As we progressed through the last few miles for the race, he asked me to cross the finish line with him. I was honored and excited at the thought of actually breaking the tape at Badwater with my long-time training partner.

As we approached the finish line, I started thinking about how happy Greg was to be on the verge of, not only finishing, but buckling in such a grueling event. Suddenly I lost total control of my emotions. About 50 feet from the finish, I had to stop by the side of the road, weeping uncontrollably as Greg crossed the finish line alone.

Challenge:

Probably my first 50K at San Juan Trail. I was pretty nervous about running farther than a marathon and over very difficult terrain. Only 30 minutes into the race, I severely twisted my ankle. Still, I managed to hobble 28 more miles to the finish.

Why:

I enjoy the physical and mental challenges, though mainly I just love to run trails. I also think the Ultrarunning community includes some of the nicest people around and count many of them as treasured friends.

Why badwater:

In the time I spent at the clinic and race last year, I developed a real appreciation for the stark beauty of the area and the deep passion for the race that eminates from Ben and Denise Jones and is shared by all those fortunate enough to be part of the Badwater family. I believe that my personal strengths as a runner, patience and determination, are best suited for a race like Badwater.

Yes, for the Runners' Report. It is a weekly email that I send to runners in the Los Angeles area. It includes a listing of upcoming club runs, races and miscellaneous running information.

Charity:

Very likely, though I probably won't contact the charity until I've been accepted into the race.
