Badwater Prediction:

Between 40 and 50 hours. Not having done this before, I am only able to compare my running times with others that have done this race, and how we fare in races together. Probably, this means NOTHING!

Weird Experience:

Meeting up with the Confederate Army on a cold snowy morning in March in the canyon below Mt. Baden Powell!!?? This was a training run in the vicinity of the AC 100 course, and the Baden Powell trail was snow covered, so we headed down into the canyon instead. Many miles and hours back into the canyon, we literally ran into a group of men authentically dressed in Civil War uniforms, complete with muskets, glasses, boots. They didn't offer an explanation and we didn't ask! (You asked)

Challenge:

I usually come away from each race with a lesson learned. But most challenging ultrarunning experience has been how to take care of my many injuries, get them healed and get back on the road. AND--how do get beyond the self-pity that comes with being out of commission. A specific running experience would have to be getting stuck on the Pacific Crest Trail at 8000 feet, in a summer storm, 25 miles from the car without warm clothes or shelter. This was frightening, to say the least, because it truly was life threatening.

Why:

3 reasons: Connection made with other ultrarunners, the beautiful courses and the mental/physical need for the challenges that are part of ultrarunning.

Why badwater:

This will be my 50th birthday celebration. I have planned this for 10 years, since first running States in 1992 for my 40th birthday. I ran my first marathon on my 30th. I like the heat, and at one time was a pretty fair road runner.

Other Exp.:

Tried cycling and got hit by a car. Am deathly afraid of water-so swimming is out. I do participate in weight training 2 to 3 times a week--that seems to be helpful, safe and entertaining.
