Weird Experience:

my rookie 50m. at the 1999 crown king, az. event.my colo. springs friend Todd had come down to help out. i didn't know alot about ultra running but,i had lived long enough in the desert to know what cholla(jumping) cactus were, and had told him of them.Todd being one to hydrate well, told me he'd be leaving the course frequently. first time out i'm at a walk waiting for him to return when i hear a scream from the early morning dawn! sure enough, out walks Todd with said cactus imbedded in a thigh. using an extra t-shirt we managed to get the monster off, but still had many needles to pull out-poor guy. he finished with a bunch of small needles still in him. somebody get me the tweezers...

Challenge:

crown king,az. 50m. 2001. i felt i had a very good chance to run with the front runners and was ready to challenge myself in that way. in 3rd place at 30m. and feeling good was a great way to start. then the fun began. a slightly torn patellar tendon created new challenges. dnf and damage control took over the thought process. alot of ice and a 6th place finish ensued. next challenge (an unexpected one at that) was depression over not performing up to my ability. to understand my first injury, realize what it would take to come back from it, and run leadville 4 months later have made me a more patient runner.

Why badwater:

i've heard about the race for a number of years, following it closely the last 2. after last years race i couldn't help but be frustrated over the fact there were no arizona participants. i train an average of 45 days a year at over 100 degrees as well as at altitude on several ocasions. i would very much like a chance to put my training environment to the test in what, i think, would be one of the most taxing races in the world.
