Badwater Prediction:

Between 40 to 50 hours

Weird Experience:

Iditasport 130 in 2001... Racing at night from mile 90 to 105... running from the Yetna River into the Alaska Range... Absolutely pitch black, no moon, snowing like hell... having been on my feet for upteem hours and seeing all kind of stuff moving... in pink, yellow and green... On top of that the howling of the wolves...

Challenge:

The 2001 Badwater Ultra was my most challenging ultrarunning experience... as it was the hottest running temperature I have ever experienced coupled with the heat radiating from the road made it an absolute Inferno... Running on the white line (which was amazingly cooler) mile after mile became surreal... you focused on moving forward on the this tiny ribbon which stretched across the desert...

Being a trail runner exclusively until 2001... where I did my first on-road marathon's and training sessions... I couldn't believe (by mile 120 or so) how sore the balls of my feet were and how much my feet swelled from size 11.5 shoes at the start to 13.5 with the toe box cut out right before Lone Pine... I had never experienced this in the past and required me to really dig deep...

This race was also the first time I have ever experienced being sick... dealing with this and still moving forward was difficult during the period from mile 66 to 80...

The race was tough, yet I learned from the experience. It was a fantastic experience and high to FINISH!

Why:

I enjoy pushing myself, meeting the other racers, the race experience, the terrain, the satisfaction of competing and finishing these races...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Why badwater:

Last year I got the taste... I know with the experience gained last year and this years training schedule... I can improve in 2002... In addition, the race is a critical part of the racing series for raising monies for my charity...
