Badwater Prediction:

Under 40 hours based on 2001 finish time of 51 hours minus 15 hour recovery @ SPW = 36 hours. I will be better prepared all the way around. Currently about 6 weeks ahead of last year's training schedule. Learned a tremendous amount from last year's event that will be compensated for in 2002.

Weird Experience:

Badwater 2001 because it was the first time I have ever experienced 'true' heat exhaustion which included fainting with loss of consciousness for approximately 15 minutes (so I was told); muscle tetany in both lower extremities and all muscle compartments; 7 bouts of vomiting; side stitch that would not go away and turned out to be an acute gall bladder attack; and more. Do not plan to have this same experience again and do not wish it upon anyone else, but the extreme experience was interesting to go through in a wierd sort of way.

Challenge:

Badwater 2001 for reason previously stated. Also, I learned most about the importance of fluid monitoring both intake and output. Reviewing the records that my crew was keeping at last year's event, I was 2/3 behind on my fluid intake at SPW which lead to my demise 2 miles later - DUH!!!

Why:

For the challenge and satisfaction that accompanies completion.

Why badwater:

You mean, why do I want to race Badwater - again? To redeem myself from last year's event which to me was more of a 2-stagged event rather than a continuous run as it is supposed to be. This is a quality event and I felt fortunate to have met so many great people in the process. And, to quote Kirk Johnson, to get the "goddamn belt buckle!"

Resume: I did successfully accomplish my second personal goal of doing 50 chin-ups in 2001 to celebrate turning 50 years old last year. Doing well at Badwater 2001 was the other which will have to wait another year. I hate delayed gratification!! Addendum: Chris, the check is in the mail!!!
