Badwater Prediction:

Under 40 hours. I base this on two things: First, my Sawtooth Relay performances - miles in 30 hours and 130 miles in 34 hours. Second, I have observed results in Ultrarunning of runners doing around 110 miles (or less) in 24 hour track events (I did this earlier this year) and also doing Badwater under 40 hours.

Weird Experience:

Sri Chinmoy 24 hours, 2000. This event had an evening start. I had not slept well the previous night, then drove 8 hours to this event on race day. During the race I overdosed on Ibuprofen and No Doze and ended up in the hospital (during the race).

Challenge:

My most challenging ultra "experience" was the time leading up to my first or possibly second ultra. My first ultra was American River 50 in 1993; second was Megan's Run (24 hours on a track) that same year. The most challenging aspect was the new (for me) mental exercise of convincing myself I could do it. Running the event itself was anticlimactic in a sense, because by the time I got to the starting line I was convinced I would be successful. To this day, I believe that the toughest part of ultrarunning is getting over whatever initial mental obstacles might exist.

Why:

I do not think I would run ultras if long distance running were not fun for me. I also enjoy the social aspect. But on a deeper level, I run ultras to present myself with challenges and surmount them. I gain satisfaction from knowing that I regularly do something that to many people is unheard of. Perhaps also, I am gratified by the example I am able to set for others, especially my children (two boys).

Why badwater:

Because it is said to be the most difficult.
