6:00 AM START Slightly overcast skies, and a balmy 106f temperature characterized the start of the 2003 Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon. The first wave of the international field gathered with great anticipation, then listened reverently to a beautiful rendition of the national anthem played by Adam Bookspan. The notes echoed off the surrounding hills to produce a wonderful acoustic experience for all. Minimal cloud cover will give the 6:00am starters good weather for the first leg of the race as they head off toward Furnace Creek and the first time station. All starters seemed to be in good spirits...hopefully we'll see lots of smiles along the way! The tortoises made a return trip to the start, with appropriate signage and goodwill for everyone.
