My Weirdest Experience:

I think the weirdest experience I ever had was doing the Triple in 2001-by mile 60 I had so many blisters on my feet that every step was excruciating. I struggled with ways to put the pain in perspective but nothing was working. Finally I decided that I would pretend the heat and pain on the bottoms of my feet was actually energy coming up through the earth into my body. Instead of stepping lightly I started planting my feet firmly on the ground and welcoming the jolt as a source of strength. It was amazing to me how a mental shift in perspective could turn pain into power.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

I think the most challenging time I ever had in an ultrarun was during the Triple in 2000--I felt really good the entire race so by mile 66 i thought I was close enough to finishing to start running fast-I think I ran about 6 miles at sub 7 minute mile pace. Not the smartest thing I ever did...At mile 72 the bottom totally fell out and I thought I wasn't going to finish the race. I got back to my support crew spooked and convinced that I was going to end up in the hospital. Luckily they knew exactly what I needed. Love and food. So, they loaded me up with both and I was back on my way.

WhyI Run Ultras:

There are so many reasons that I love doing ultraendurance races. I guess the main one is that it makes me feel grateful to be alive and kicking. The ultraendurance events open up something that makes me feel really connected to myself, the people I love and the world I live in.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I guess I could say that the reason I want to do Badwater is I have done the Triple Ironman for the past three years and I am looking for a new challenge. The truth is I don't have an intellectual reason for wanting to do the race. I just kind of feel it in my bones. I love death valley. I love the desert. I like heat. I keep imagining about what the sky would look like at night. And how bright the sun will be during the day.

My Other Ultrasport Experience:

I have been doing Ironman Triathlons since 1995. I have competed in Hawaii 4 times and have done about 15 regular Ironman races including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Lake Placid, Florida.

Media that will cover my experience in this race:

I have a bunch of possibilities for media coverage during this race. Nothing is certain, but there is a chance that A&E cable TV might be doing something as well as ESPN magazine.
