Previous Badwater Racing Experience: None.
Previous Badwater Crewing Experience: 2002 crew member/pacer for Jason Hodde. Ran/walked approximately 15 miles during the race period. Learned: Be prepared for the unexpected, things can happen very quickly, patience is required, things don't always get worse, and a little luck
always helps.
Previous Badwater Clinic Experience: None.

My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

Between 50-60 hours, to judiciously use the time allowed to complete the race. Over the many 24 hour races I have participated in I have learned the importance of careful pacing - going slower than what feels comfortable in the early stages of a race, staying the course when the dark of night robs optimism and the end seems hopelessly distant. Miles completed in 24 hours have been very consistent over the years, so adding some time for the conditions and the situation of this race might make for a reasonable prediction.

My Weirdest Experience:

Running my second ultra, a 24 hour run in 1988 (Labor Day Track Run, Fond Du Lac, WI), on a quarter mile flooded track. Rained 3-4 inches throughout the day and night. Bonked so bad that anything else since seems pale in comparison - was clocked at 30 minutes for a quarter mile - but I kept moving. That night, imaginary friends taught me many lessons!

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

Running ultras on back to back weekends or with very little time between them – getting in shape, running within oneself, recuperating quickly, and getting mentally and physically prepared for the next one. Running ultras of varying distance, time requirements and terrain. Ran 14 ultras in 2002, many on back-to-back weekends and with much variety in distance and terrain.

WhyI Run Ultras:

I started running ultras out of curiousity, which is still a big reason that I enter many different kinds of races, but the bigger reason now for doing ultras is simply that I can - prepare, plan, complete and compete.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

To see if I can do it. Having read about it for years, then preparing for the crew assignment, I just haven’t been able to forget about the race, the place, the experience.
