My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

Between 40 and 50 hours:
I finished last year with 54 hours although we had several problems, both with the car and more dramatic with blisters and heat. I have a much more sophisticated plan for training (including heat training) and we have a lot more of experience that allows us to finish in a much better time compared to last year.

My Weirdest Experience:

The Marathon des Sables 1999: I had no experinece, neiter in desert-running nor in long distance running. I had problems in every possible way: blisters, heat problems, wrong food, backpack-broblems, dehydration, i was not trained properly - but i finished. Nevertheless i have leared much and have increased my personal fitness and my knowledge about desert and long distance runs in the meantime. Additionally 1999 was the first and only time i made a desert race without proper preparation and i learned not to do this again (i mean not correctly ptrepared). The other thing i have learned was the beauty of nature in deserts.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

without any additional comment: BADWATER 2002

Why I Run Ultras:

I run long-distance runs primarily in the desert or in rural landsapes. it is the nature, and the personal feelings you experience. being out (in the desert or on the road) for a long time leads to a specific flow-experimence. not necessarily hallucinations but you can see how the priorities of everyday-life change. Although it is a competition time looses its importance.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

Several reasons in arbitrary order:

  • I completed Badwater 2002 and missed the buckle (48 hours offset) because of blisters and some heat problems that i am sure i can avoid this time: so i want the buckle!
  • Together with Holger Finkernagel (Badwater participant 2002) i perfrormed a scientific study measuring psychological and physiological parameteres (by holger and me). I would like to repeat this study in a more sophisticated manner. This means i would like to measure EEG and EMG on myself during the whole race and additionally would like (if possible) to get saliva tests from some other participants too for a humoal analysis. I meanwhile have conacted several maufacturers of EEG- and MEG systens and asked for a collaboration (i.e. to get a system for rent). I meanwhile work for mor than 10 years with EEG and have made a few studies about the motivation of ultramarathoners etc. Measuring EEG during running is a highly complicated process and i have meanwhile tried sveral setings to be able to perform this study. But the most important point is not to get the money or the equipment - the most important point is to get the invitation to participate. If possible i will perform these experiments, but these are not the only reason to participate. Even if I would not get the money for this study or will have problems with the equipment (due to heat etc.) i would like to participate.
  • last but not least: During all my desert runs (Marathon des Sables, 2xDesert Cup and Badwater) i have made so many personally highly impressing experineces that i would like to have one more chance to participate in badwater. Because coming to Badwater from Austria is quite expensive it is not possible to come there just to crew or to visit and encourage the runners. otherwise i would be there just to meet these people (including denise and ben jones) again.
