My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

I plan to attempt a sub 40 hour finish. In the last 5 years, I have completed every major adventure race in the world. Running has always provided the base for my fitness. To that end, I have run everything from 5k (16:55 on Thanksgiving Day) to 50k (Bulldog 50k, Malibu CA, Sept 2002-4th Overall out of 250)

My Weirdest Experience:

In 2001, I competed in a 50k at Ft. Ord in Monterey CA. About halfway thru the race I was in 5th place and running pretty well. I was following a runner that I knew from other races. I don't think I had ever beaten him, so I was hopeful that I could get him this time. Suddenly, there was a loud noise and movement from some bushes on our right. Before either of us could react, a deer jumped across the trail, hitting the other runner squarely in the chest and knocking him about 15 feet off the trail. The deer just stood there looking at him, apparently taunting him. (That's how I saw it anyway) So I weighed my options: 1. Help my fellow runner 2. Pretend I saw nothing and keep running 3. Have venison for the next month (I chose #1) By the way, the guy still beat me.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

The Nanango Forest 50 miler was extremely hilly hot. I chose to enter the race on the day before and was surpised that I did so well. (I was 1st overall out of about 100 runners)

WhyI Run Ultras:

I compete in ultra distance events for many reasons but first and foremost is self exploration. I look at these events as having the ability to peel away all of the day to day crap that goes on in most lives. At some point in every event I hope to be totally depleted and forced to draw upon my inner strength to survive. If there is not at least a good chance of failure, I would not be interested in competing. Ultarunning is the perfect combination of risk and reward. I have one other important reason to run. Over 10 years ago I made a decision to change my life. I was a drug addict and alcoholic and on July 23rd 1992, I quit. Every event I compete in is another reminder of just how lucky I am to be alive. I have 2 young sons that I am trying to be a good example for.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I have been adventure racing for years and lately I have been a teammate of Marshall Ulich and Mark Macy. I have been aware of Badwater for many years, but have actually become fixated on the event in the last year or so. The primary reason for this is Marshall. I have listened to his stories of pain and suffering from Badwater. I am certain that Badwater will help me continue on my path of exploration and help me to reach a higher plain of understanding.
