Previous Badwater Racing Experience:

Previous Badwater Crewing Experience: I crewed for Tia Rosen at the 2002 race. I ran approximately 30 miles of the
course off & on with her thoughout the two days. I learned many things by crewing for & running with a participant -
mostly that it is very, very hot in Death Valley in July...

Previous Badwater Clinic Experience:

My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

I anticipate finishing this race in 40 to 50 hours. The only thing that I have to base this prediction on is the fact that I do not intend to run all the way across the desert and part way up Whitney & not get the buckle!

My Weirdest Experience:

I suppose my wierdest running experience would be running all night for the first time at Western States & falling asleep on my feet & falling down. Previous to this I was unaware that anyone could fall asleep while running.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

My most challenging ultra running experience would have to have been my first year running Western States in 2001. I was sick from the afternoon on that day and just became sicker & sicker through the night. I had never DNF'd before so I was very determined to continue. Around midnight it became clear that I would not to be able to complete the race, but at that point there was no simple access off of the course. The aid staion personel informed my pacer that I would have to go 5 more miles to the river to be shuttled out. I must have thrown up every ten minutes for the next 3 hours which is how long it took me to go the 5 miles. A memorable experience to be sure.

Why I Run Ultras:

I run ultras to experience things that the average person does not get to experience. Whether it is seeing some spectacular scenery far off of the beaten path or experiencing some spectacular suffering (see above!) and rising above it to complete the event, I feel that it sets me apart from most other people in a small but significant way. Most importantly I do it because the friendships that I have forged while doing these types of events (with other runners, friends, family & crew) are deep & everlasting and never seem to fade.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I look forward to competeing in the 2003 Badwater Race because of all of the reasons I have listed above & because I have not as yet made any alternative plans for a summer vacation.

My Other Ultrasport Experience:

I have done a few triathlons but inevitably did not enjoy getting wet before getting to the real "meat" of the event, namely the running. I do not expect that this will be a problem in Death Valley.

Media that will cover my experience in this race:

I wish that I could say that I have been turning down dozens of requests to cover my trek across the desert, but alas, no. Should ABC's Wide World of Sports contact me prior to the start of the race, I would probably consider letting them do it.
