My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

Under 40 Hours (35). Finished in 38:47 in 1997. Also, last year, 2002, I was on pace to finish in 35 hours and that was my goal. 10:50 at Stovepipe Wells, 18 hours to the half at 67. Made a major mistake between Townes Pass and Panamint Springs and dropped at 78 not because I did not have time to finish. Was just feeling sorry for myself which has haunted me like a nightmare every day since then.

My Weirdest Experience:

1996 Badwater. A black bear ran into the side of my truck at Whitney Portals while my sister was driving with six miles to go in the race at night.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

They are all challenging. Mile for mile, Badwater is probably the worse but you have a lot of time to finish. Leadville is tough because of the shorter time limit. I dropped at Hardrock in 2000 because I started out too hard and got sick, got back in, got lost and had to abandon the run at about 40 miles at night because I could not follow the trail. In 2001, I had to drop at 11 miles because I had a fracture of my left ankle at 9 miles.

Why I Run Ultras:

To become immune from suffering. You don't actually become immune from it, you just accept it. It is the ultimate test of will. In ultras, you will find an answer to your question; Will I be able to see this race to the finish when I become deathly sick and realize there is absolutely no point to any of it. Will I be able to continue on?

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I have fallen in love with Death Valley and the race. I totally love the challenge and the mental strategy it takes to be successful at it. Like a gambler, I keep betting on the big one, of having the perfect race (35 hours). I would also like to complete the course 10 times. Also, I need to "get back in the saddle" after quiting last year at 78 miles.

My Other Ultrasport Experience:

Bike for relazation. Just do basic exercises and some weights to stay fit.

Here is my athletic resume: I am the race director for a local certified 10K and 5K race in August of each year. This has been my contribution back to the running community for all that it has given me over the years. And it helps to promote the local economy. And I love doing it. The social aspect of running and races is what makes them successful.
