My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

Under 40 hours.
I have had personal best times in almost all events this past year.
5K: 16:52
10K: 35:39
8 mile: 47:12
Half Marathon: 1:20
Austin Motorola Marathon: 2:59
I was the first low altitude finisher and I broke the existing Texas mens record at the Leadville Trail 100 this year. Paul Stone a three time finisher of Badwater and local training partner feels I can run under 40 hours given my recent times in other events.

My Weirdest Experience:

My weirdest ultrarunning experience was at the Leadville Trail 100. My pacer,Howard Culp, ran off the trail coming down Hope Pass. He began flipping in the rough boulders breaking multiple ribs and sustaining multiple cuts and bruises. I am a medical doctor but as you know there is not much one can do without medical equipment. Fortunately he recovered but as I was watching him fall I really thought it was going to kill him.

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

My most challenging ultrarunning experience was this years Massanutten Trail 100. It had miles and miles of rock trails that I was unable to run on. My feet and ankles where swollen for 1 week after the run.

Why I Run Ultras:

I run ultras because they make me feel great. I love the shock value that friends, patients, and family have when they discover their nature and length. Most people in East Texas feel that you are too old to run after the age of 18 and unhealthy if you aren't at least 20 pounds overweight. Most importantly there are a number of people enjoying running and ultrarunning that didn't know they could before they met me.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

My dad (a retired college track coach) told me about the Leadville Trail 100 and Badwater about 10 years ago. I have wanted to run them ever since. The 100 mile trail runs are entirely different than Badwater. Badwater is anther type of challenge. Other challenges I am considering are the Eco Challenge, the Hawaii Iron Man, and climbing Mt. Everest as well as others mountains.
