My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

I'm looking to finish under 40 hours. Last year, due to the smoke and an error in preparation, I was unable to accomplish this goal. I'm on track to be the first hip replacement entrant to set this mark!

My Weirdest Experience:

The hallucinations on last year's Badwater event. They were so vivid that I amused my crew with my meanderings about buffalo, deer and antelope. Of course, they occurred on the way to Lone Pine during the second evening. Awesome!

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

Last year's Badwater 135. What with the smoke, record temperatures and blistering (I'm determined to solve this) I survived the event but had to finally resort to PLAN C (and the wonderful support of my crew).

Why I Run Ultras:

Because I still can't buy the red sports car and chasing young flesh tears me up.

But all that aside, the sport provides the most challenging and rewarding opportunities for personal accomplishment for a disabled athlete like myself.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I still have an unfinished goal in the Valley. I am not one to leave any goal unaccomplished.

I will be the first hip replacement patient to go under 40 hours in the Badwater 135 if given the opportunity.

My Other Ultrasport Experience:

Ironman South Africa - 2000. Finishing in 13 hrs and 34 minutes.

I just ride recreationally for now, as crosstraining activity. Last year I made the mistake of riding a century 36 hours prior to Badwater's start. Not a wise decision for my recovery ability and it proved to be a factor in slowing me down in my finish last year. So, no cycling before Death Valley!
