Previous Badwater Racing Experience: I competed in the 2001 and 2002 Badwater 135 mile races. In 1999 I underestimated the effects of the heat and crashed hard at 60 miles. So I enlisted Lisa Smith as my coach for the 2002 race and I entered the race feeling strong. I had a good lead in my 8:00 a.m. wave when my support vehicle started having engine problems. We continued having problems for about 6 hours until we deemed that it was not safe to continue. This year I am planning on having two support vehicles so I don't have this problem again! The training is going great and I look forward to the 2003 event. There is nothing like it in the world!!!
Previous Badwater Crewing Experience: I have only participated as a racer for the last two years.
Previous Badwater Clinic Experience: None

My Badwater Finishing Prediction:

Under 40 hours. I was under a 30 time table when I had to drop last year due to support vehicle problems. I am still coached by Lisa Smith and we both feel that a sub 30 hour time is definitely within my reach. I have run sub 2:15 for the marathon so I do have leg speed and am training specificly for this event!

My Weirdest Experience:

The 2002 Badwater Ultra. One of my crew members proposed to his girfriend while we were running on the course. It was just as the sun was going down and the sunset was fantastic. My crew member and I were plotting the best way to propose for almost 40 miles! (She said Yes!!)

My Most Challenging Race Experience:

Badwater has always been a challenge for me. The first year I did not train correctly for it and underestimated the effect of the heat. In 2002 I trained correctly but did not plan for an additional support vehicle. This race has become my nemisis and I can't rest until I have conquered it!

WhyI Run Ultras:

The people out there are by far the nicest in the world! The support from family and friends are not equal to anything I have ever done before. You make friendships and relationships that last a lifetime.

Why I want a slot on the start line of the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon:

I have competed in this race the last two years and have come up short. I feel that I can race this run well if all goes to plan. I have gained a lot of knowledge over the last couple of years that I feel will make a huge difference this year. I would love the oppurtunity to prove that to myself and the ones that have always supported me.

My Other Ultrasport Experience:

I am also a 3rd degree Black Belt in Taekwon Do and am the head instructor in my school in Michigan.

I also run road marathons with my wife.
