This race is produced by the Yunnan Province division of XingZhi Co. Ltd. (which translates to “Expedition Wisdom”), a China-wide event production company that has hosted a four-day trail running stage race in the Gobi Desert for ten consecutive years and also now hosts the Ultra-Trail Gobi, a 400km non-stop ultramarathon, along with literally dozens of other events. But they hired Badwater Race Director Chris Kostman to help them create, develop, operate, manage, and promote the Mt. Gaoligong Ultra. Chris is making multiple trips to China in 2016 to work with his colleagues at XingZhi to consult on every aspect of the race, including for a full month in November when he co-directed the inaugural race.
Chris’ Chinese co-race director, Lin Ma, is rock solid and his nickname for him is “Mr. Cool.” Even though his English is minimal and Chris’ Chinese is even more non-existent, they both speak the same language and are committed to hosting a truly world-class race. They are two peas in a pod, or, as the Chinese say, “two grasshoppers on a straw.”
The entry fee is US$599 (app.). There are also very affordable packages available which include local hotel, local transportation, and more, making it very simple to participate!

The Mt. Gaoligong Ultra is extremely difficult, with well over 29,000 feet (8800m) of cumulative elevation gain, and a corresponding loss of more than 29,000 feet. The start and finish are in Tengchong, Yunnan Province, China. It will be held primarily on mountain trails (single track, double track, jeep roads, some cobblestones, and such.) Much of the route traverses a National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The race will be fully supported, with a marked trail, 14 fully stocked aid stations, drop bag service, and more; see below for details.
Personal support crews are neither necessary nor encouraged due to the remoteness of the route and the quality of support provided by the organizers.
There is a 36-hour time limit and corresponding mandatory time cut-offs along the route at each of the 14 checkpoints.

The elevation ranges from a low of 4131 feet (1261mi) to 8763 feet (2671m). See below for the elevation profile and many more route details.
